State media say Chinese leader Xi Jinping has appealed for negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, warning 'there is no winner in a nuclear war.'

Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke by phone Wednesday for the first time since Russia's invasion, two months after Beijing said it wanted to act as a peace mediator in the war against Ukraine and after Xi visited Moscow last month.

In China, the phone call was reported by state media. China Central Television said Beijing intends to send an envoy to Kyiv to discuss "a political settlement" for the war. With the step, Xi's government reinforced China's claim to being neutral in the war, despite blocking efforts at the United Nations to condemn the Kremlin's invasion.

Meanwhile, Zelenskyy on Wednesday used the 37th anniversary of the world's worst nuclear disaster to repeat his warnings about the potential threat of a new atomic catastrophe in Ukraine amid his country's war with Russia. Zelenskyy said Kyiv has since then reestablished prewar security measures and scientific activities within the zone. But he cautioned that future moves from Moscow could endanger global nuclear safety.

Russian forces have also been stationed at Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Europe's largest and one of the 10 biggest in the world, since capturing the site early in the war.

US, Filipino forces show power in drills amid China tensionsUS, Filipino forces show power in drills amid China tensionsAmerican and Filipino forces have fired a barrage of high-precision rockets, airstrikes and artillery in their largest war drills in Philippine waters facing the disputed South China Sea that would likely antagonize China. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday watched the American show of firepower from a tower in northwestern Zambales province. It’s the latest indication of his strong backing of his country’s treaty alliance with the U.S. His order for the Philippine military to shift its focus to external defense amid China’s aggressive actions in the South China Sea falls in sync with the Biden administration’s aim of reinforcing an arc of Indo-Pacific alliances to better counter China.
