Experts warn that because millions of elderly people still need to be vaccinated, it will be mid-2023 or later before restrictions can be lifted completely. China’s low infection rates also mean few people have developed natural immunity, a factor that might set back reopening plans if“Moving forward, the critical issue is how will the health system cope with expected increase in infections and hospitalisation,” Dr Tsang said.
But he does not believe Mr Xi will put the country or a whole city or province under another lockdown, and local anti-Covid measures will unlikely spark“With death figures likely to be made ‘patriotic’, I doubt that anyone outside of the Chinese party-state will get a real sense of the scale of Covid deaths, so it may not trigger the anger that led to the protests over a week ago,” Dr Tsang added.
Xi Chen, an associate professor at the Yale School of Public Health in the US, warned that the “timing is really bad” in what he described as a “looming crisis”.
