China has bold plans to build an International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) near the moon’s south pole by 2035.
Like the United States, China aims to set up a long-term human base camp on the Moon. For this, scientists are developing innovative techniques to build structures on the moon, using materials found on the lunar surface.
The performance of the bricks will be evaluated in space to determine if they can withstand extreme conditions and are suitable for building a lunar research outpost.Reportedly, the brick samples will be sent onboard the Tianzhou-8 cargo spacecraft next month to the space station. China’s three-module space station has been in operation since 2021. It orbits in low Earth orbit, roughly 217-280 miles above the planet’s surface.
The soil was baked in a vacuum hot-press furnace using a graphite mold to simulate the conditions on the moon.near the moon’s south pole by 2035. The base could be constructed using bricks made from lunar soil. Ding and the team expect that the first brick made from real lunar soil will be produced during China’s Chang’e-8 mission in 2028.“Chinese Super Masons”
