China's electric car market is predicted to experience a significant slowdown in 2025, according to analyst forecasts, placing considerable pressure on companies striving for survival. Despite declining profit margins, robust sales volumes have enabled struggling companies to remain afloat. Yuqian Ding, head of China autos research at HSBC, stated in a report last week that this situation is unsustainable and anticipates a rapid acceleration in industry consolidation.
China witnessed a surge in new energy vehicle sales last year, a category encompassing both battery-only and hybrid-powered cars, with a 42% increase reaching nearly 11 million units, according to the China Passenger Car Association. Leading brands saw their NEV sales skyrocket, exceeding 40% growth to nearly 4.3 million units, surpassing their internal target of at least 20% growth from 2023. However, HSBC analysts project a more modest 20% increase in China's new energy vehicle sales this year, accompanied by intensified industry consolidation. They forecast BYD's unit sales growth to be around 14%.China's government has implemented a combination of subsidies and consumer purchase incentives that have fueled the rapid expansion of new energy vehicles in recent years. These incentives, coupled with intense competition, have resulted in aggressive pricing strategies. Smartphone giant Xiaomi, for example, launched its SU7 electric sedan last year at a price point $4,000 lower than Tesla's Model 3, forcing rivals to follow suit. This price war has significantly compressed the overall profit margin in the automotive industry, particularly as EVs gain momentum. HSBC's Ding pointed out that BYD's net profit margin is only 5%, significantly lower than the double-digit margins enjoyed by top automakers during the peak of the traditional fossil fuel car era
