Despite a lack of established Chinese brands and a 100% import tariff, Chinese-built vehicles narrowly outperformed their UK counterparts in 2024 US sales. This unexpected success raises questions about the future of the British auto industry, which appears to be struggling to compete with Chinese manufacturers.
Despite the absence of any truly Chinese brands in the U.S. market and the imposition of a 100% import tariff on Chinese-built vehicles, cars manufactured in China narrowly outperformed those built in the U.K. in 2024 sales. A combination of models from Buick, Lincoln, Volvo , and Polestar collectively outsold the offerings of seven U.K.-based brands: Jaguar, Land Rover, Mini, Rolls-Royce, Lotus, Bentley, and McLaren.
This unexpected outcome raises concerns for the struggling British auto industry.\Jaguar, facing declining sales, is shifting its focus towards higher-margin, smaller-market models. Mini's attempt to move production to China was thwarted by tariffs. While Land Rover still enjoys decent sales, it's not enough to offset the significant volume disparity. The U.K.'s automakers appear to be catering solely to the ultra-wealthy, suggesting they struggle to compete with American, mainland European, and Chinese companies on price. \China's automotive industry, despite facing initial hurdles with a 25% import tariff and subsequent attempts by the Biden administration to curb its export growth, has managed to carve out a niche in the U.S. market. With over 80,000 Chinese-built vehicles sold in 2024, China edged out the U.K. in sales, according to J.D. Power Vice President of Data & Analytics Tyson Jominy. This achievement is noteworthy considering the limited number of Chinese models available and the absence of any true blockbusters. Volvo's S90 sedan, built in China, saw limited sales last year (1,364 units). The Swedish luxury brand also introduced the EX30 EV from China, but tariffs significantly impacted its volume and delayed its ambitions. However, the EX30 showed promise with 240 units sold in 2024 despite the challenges.\The China-built Polestar 2, a highly competitive model, contributed significantly to China's success, with sales reaching 12,903 units. Buick's Envision SUV emerged as the top-selling Chinese-built vehicle in the U.S., surpassing sales figures of most British brands. Lincoln's China-built Nautilus SUV also performed well, recording 36,544 sales in 2024. The question remains whether these sales will be sustainable in 2025 and beyond, given the high import tariffs. While some automakers might have preemptively imported vehicles ahead of the tariff increase, the long-term viability of importing at such a cost remains uncertain. The future of the Chinese auto industry in the U.S. is poised for continued growth, regardless of import challenges
