The satellite will help maintain communications for China’s ambitious upcoming lunar missions. The first mission it will support is China’s Chang’e-6 far-side sample return mission, due to take place in May.
The Queqiao-2 satellite has a mass of 1,200 kilograms, and it is equipped with a 4.2-meter parabolic antenna. It will use X and UHF bands to communicate with China’s Chang’e spacecraft. If all goes to plan, the satellite will have a lifetime of almost a decade. It is expected to support Chang’e-6 and the Chang’e-7 and Chang’e-8 missions to the lunar south pole.
