Private space company Galactic Energy could debut the world's first electromagnetic rocket launch pad by 2028.
China ’s space administration has made great strides in recent years. The country’s space program has hit some important milestones in its attempts to challenge US dominance – launching the Tiangong space station, deploying the Mars Zhurong rover in 2021, and retrieving lunar samples from the Moon’s far side.
Now, the country is developing a potentially revolutionary new rocket launch system. According to a report from the South China Morning Post, this could see China challenge SpaceX’s satellite launch dominance. The new system, developed by private space company Galactic Energy, will use maglev technology to propel satellites to space with incredible speed and efficiency. If all goes to plan, it could be operational by 2028.Galactic Energy’s electromagnetic launch padChinese startup Galactic Energy has a track record of ambitious announcements. Last year, the company announced Pallas-1, China’s first reusable rocket. Now, the private space firm says it aims to debut the world’s first electromagnetic rocket launch pad by 2028. Launching a reusable rocket might allow Galactic Energy and China’s space industry to catch up with SpaceX eventually. Developing an operational maglev rocket launch pad could, in theory, see it advance the industry to new heights.According to the SCMP report, Galactic Energy is developing the new technology in partnership with the Ziyang government in Sichuan and the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation .The system uses superconducting magnets to accelerate a rocket to supersonic speeds before ignition. The process is comparable to a maglev train being launched vertically. It would accelerate rockets to speeds above Mach 1 .The rise of experimental satellite launch systemsThe new electromagnetic launch pad system is one of several experimental methods that could alter the way satellites are flown to space.US firm SpinLaunch, for example, is developing a massive centrifuge that would catapult small spacecraft toward space. The spacecraft would fire up an engine for the final ascent. Green Launch, meanwhile, aims to fire payloads straight into orbit using a massive space cannon.Much like the electromagnetic launch system, these systems would cut down on fuel costs. During a traditional rocket launch, a great deal of fuel and energy is required to reach escape velocity and fly to orbit. These new experimental systems would generate much of that energy via the launch pad – or in SpinLaunch’s case, the centrifuge. This would greatly cut down on fuel costs. What’s more, according to Li Ping, president of the Ziyang Commercial Space Launch Technology Research Institute, Galactic Energy’s electromagnetic launch pad technology could double payload capacity. The launch track would also require less maintenance than a traditional launch pad. This would enable a high launch cadence. Of course, there’s a risk the experimental launch system won’t work. If it does, the reward could be enormous, as it could give China’s launch sector a key advantage over the competition. Successfully introducing electromagnetic launch technology to the world would be comparable to the advent of SpaceX’s pioneering reusable rocket technology.
