China expands visa-free transit policy, allowing eligible travelers to stay for up to 10 days in parts of the country.

China announced an expansion of its visa-free transit policy, permitting eligible foreign travelers to remain in designated areas for up to 10 days. The National Immigration Agency revealed this measure, effective immediately, on its WeChat account. Passport holders from 54 countries, encompassing Europe, Latin America, Asia, the United States, and others, qualify for this policy.

Previously, visa-free stays in China ranged from 72 to 144 hours, contingent on onward travel to a third destination. Under the new scheme, travelers with confirmed departure tickets within 10 days can enter China through 60 locations across 24 provinces, including Beijing and Shanghai. Transit visitors can also travel between regions during their 10-day stay, subject to certain restrictions. This visa waiver program is attractive to travelers, including Americans, who might otherwise face a complex visa process for travel to China or elsewhere. As the world's second-largest economy, China has been actively seeking to revive international tourism following three years of pandemic-related isolation. It has progressively relaxed its visa policies in recent months. Passport holders from 38 countries are now exempt from visas entirely, allowing them to stay in China for up to 30 days for various purposes, including business, tourism, family visits, and exchange
