Scott Waldron, an agricultural economist at the University of Queensland, said China’s domestic barley production had nearly doubled since 2018 which meant it could argue there was now scope to lift the tariffs.“China has been on a campaign to increase its domestic barley production. A big driver for the case was food security, and that China was too reliant on imports of barley, especially from Australia,” Mr Waldron said.

Australia-China Relations Institute executive James Laurenceson said if China did not lift the tariffs, it would prompt a reassessment within the Australian government of just how committed Beijing was to improving relations.
