The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC (CAPE)) is launching a program to attract outstanding young scientists from overseas to boost China's science and technology capabilities. The program offers opportunities for research and career development in various fields related to public health and aims to foster a new generation of scientific leaders.
To bolster China's scientific and technological prowess and draw top young scientists from abroad, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine), hereinafter referred to as China CDC (CAPE), is launching an initiative to attract and support outstanding young scholars. This program targets individuals who have made significant contributions in natural sciences and engineering disciplines while working overseas, including foreign nationals.
The program's core aim is to entice these talented individuals to return or relocate to China for full-time employment, empowering them to independently define their research paths and conduct innovative research. The overarching goal of this endeavor is to accelerate the development of young scientific and technological talent, cultivate a new generation of promising academic leaders capable of leading global scientific research, and significantly contribute to China's ambitious goal of becoming a global leader in science and technology. The program is designed in alignment with the 2025 Guidelines for the National Natural Science Foundation of China Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Overseas). Detailed requirements are subject to the official 2026 program guidelines issued by the NSFC.\Applicants are expected to adhere to the laws and regulations of the People's Republic of China, demonstrate impeccable scientific integrity, and embody the ethical principles of scientists in the new era. The program particularly welcomes research focused on natural sciences and engineering, encompassing fields such as pathogenic microbiology, immunology, cell biology, biochemistry and molecular biology, epidemiology and health statistics, nutrition and food hygiene, occupational health and environmental health, toxicology, radiological medicine, public health laboratory science, social medicine and health service management, vaccinology, bioinformatics, biostatistics, structural biology, omics, artificial intelligence, and database technology and big data management. Eligible candidates must hold a doctoral degree and have a proven track record of research experience at a recognized overseas university, research institution, or corporate R&D organization. For those with exceptional achievements and their doctoral degree obtained overseas, the length-of-service requirements may be adjusted. Individuals who held paid positions concurrently within China during their overseas employment will be evaluated on the basis of the time served in the domestic position. Applicants are expected to possess research or technological achievements recognized by their peers and demonstrate potential to become academic leaders or distinguished experts in their respective fields. Upon acceptance of the funding, awardees must resign from any overseas employment and commit to full-time work in China for a specified duration. Successful applicants must also comply with the guidelines regarding the overall alignment of national science and technology talent programs. Only one program at the same tier is permitted, and reverse-tier applications are not accepted.\China CDC (CAPE) has a rich history of scientific contributions, notably in scientific research and innovation, education and training, disease surveillance, policy advocacy, and international cooperation. These efforts played a key role in addressing critical shortcomings in China’s public health infrastructure, including limitations in research and policy studies and a shortage of highly qualified preventive medicine professionals. Embracing the philosophy that world-class research drives world-class disease control, which in turn supports world-class research, China CDC (CAPE) has leveraged advanced applied research to bolster its technological capabilities, institutional capacity, and talent reserves. It has played a crucial role in providing technical leadership, expert guidance, and decision-making support in the prevention and control of major infectious diseases and in managing public health emergencies. China CDC (CAPE) possesses distinct strengths in areas such as pathogen biology and communicable disease prevention and control, epidemiology and health big data, nutrition, environmental, occupational, and radiological health, and public health security and emergency management. Awardees will be offered employment at China CDC (CAPE) at the Research Fellow or Associate Research Fellow level, supported by a comprehensive talent package, including a dedicated talent allowance and transitional housing. Furthermore, awardees will take on leadership roles as discipline leads and be appointed as doctoral supervisors. They will receive substantial start-up research funding from both China CDC (CAPE) and national sources. They will also gain priority access to high-level research instruments and equipment, such as the cryo-electron microscope, and have shared access to existing cohorts and surveillance network data. Each awardee will be allocated an annual admission quota for three graduate students
