China has hit back at Australia’s defence force revamp, saying it’s striving for a peaceful region.

| Beijing has rejected suggestions China’s military build-up is the biggest threat facing Australia in the region, as it accused the Albanese government’s Defence Strategic Review of “hyping up” concerns about Xi Jinping’s regime., China’s foreign ministry said Beijing was committed to peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific and did not pose a threat to any country.

“This build-up is occurring without transparency or reassurance to the Indo-Pacific region of China’s strategic intent,” the report said.“China’s assertion of sovereignty over the South China Sea threatens the global rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific in a way that adversely impacts Australia’s national interests. China is also engaged in strategic competition in Australia’s near neighbourhood.

The foreign ministry’s response to Australia’s announcement on Monday was short and relatively restrained compared to the more aggressive rhetoric directed towards Canberra a year ago.
