Chili’s is living up to its spicy reputation by throwing scorching-hot shade at another casual dining chain. On March 20, Chili’s responded to an X post claiming that Ruth’s Chris Steak House had a “new” dress code requiring guests to don “business casual” attire, with “diners who don’t comply being relegated to the bar,” according to the viral post.

“The only dress code at Chili’s is that you have to be dressed,” the official Chili’s account posted. This post is only partly true: Ruth’s Chris does indeed have a dress code, which is prominently posted on its website. “Business casual — proper attire required please,” the website reads. “Kindly remove all hats when entering the restaurant,” it continues. “Guests wearing ball caps are asked to dine in the bar/lounge.” The dress code also lists clothing items that are “not permitted” at Ruth’s Chris, including “gym wear, pool attire, tank tops, clothing with offensive graphics or language, revealing clothing or exposed undergarments.” But the fashion policy is not new. It’s been posted verbatim on the Ruth’s Chris website since at least April 2021, according to the Internet Archive, and likely predates its internet posterity. Both Chili’s and Ruth’s Chris declined to comment to TODAY.com. Responses to this information, however timely, were mixed. “I KNOW THATS RIGHT, I’ll see y’all tomorrow,” one user wrote in support of Chili’s declaration. Another asked, “Mr. Chili’s, can I please wear my top hat and opera cloak to your fine establishment?” “Chilis would never turn us away in times of need,” wrote one more. Some people voiced support for Ruth’s Chris’ policy, though. “More restaurants should start doing this. Not everything is for everyone,” posted one such person. “People act how they’re dressed. When you take time to get dressed nice, you tend to act a different way than if you’re in sweatpants and a tank top lol.” And one person simply had a grammatical gripe they wanted to voice about Ruth’s Chris: “Feel like if they are going to have a dress code they gotta fix their restaurant name.”
