The findings offer a practical insight into how promoting sustainable behaviours in children can bring added psychological benefits.

New Mexican research has found that feeling connected to nature appears to boost a child’s happiness and increase the likelihood that they engage in eco-friendly behaviours.

Each child was asked to say how much they agreed with statements about their connectedness to nature, such as “Humans are part of the natural world” and statements about their sustainable behaviours — including pro-ecological, frugal, altruistic and equitable behaviours — such as “I separate empty bottles to recycle”.The findings showed that there was a significant relationship between feeling connected to nature and performing sustainable behaviours.

They also note that the findings back up those found in previous studies on adults, which have also suggested that connectedness to nature is linked to pro-environmental behaviours, and in turn to higher levels of happiness.
