Some groups even braved the blustery weather to take a walk over to the bison viewing platform, to catch a glimpse of the herd. Wanuskewin Heritage Park CEO Darlene Brander said watching young children get excited about having the bison here is one of the most meaningful parts of the day.— these young folks — are going to be the first generation that sees bison at Wanuskewin and thinks it’s pretty normal,” she said.
“We want to provide learning experiences that really ensure that the people who come and visit us are learning about Wanuskewin’s history, the heritage, what the present looks like, and then maybe have some discussions about what’s happening in the future.”Article content She said this year’s celebrations have more than lived up to her dreams of what Indigenous Peoples Day at Wanuskewin should be.
“We are busy, and swamped with kids, and that’s what we want,” she said. “We really enjoy the day. It’s a big day. It takes a lot of energy, but the energy and the feelings that we get back from the public are pretty phenomenal. We have visitors from two to 72 years old, and older. And for us, hearing the sound of the children playing and talking and laughing is music to our ears.”
