Serious questions are being raised after a mother claimed her child was dropped off at the wrong bus stop blocks away, leaving him to wander alone and afraid.

The street sign at Colvin and Masseth streets in Rochester is pictured Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2026. Rochester, N.Y. — Questions are being raised after a mother claimed her child was dropped off at the wrong bus stop blocks away, leaving him to wander alone and afraid.

As tears fell down her face, Marla Acevedo told 13WHAM her 9-year-old son, Kyle, rode the school bus home Monday and was dropped off a half mile away from their home in Rochester."I was at work, my husband calls me at 4 p.m., then my son's still not home," she continued. "So my train of thought was 'Where is my son?'" Acevedo said nearly two weeks ago, she contacted Flower City School No. 54 in the Rochester City School District to change the drop-off address for her son starting Monday. "Three or four times I asked them. I wanted to be sure that they got his transfer for the transportation," she said."They told me it was a school problem," she said. "School's closed, it's 4 p.m." Acevedo said her husband began driving around searching for their son. After nearly an hour, her phone rang. On the other end was a Rochester police officer. Kyle had been located blocks away, alone and scared, inside a convenience store on the corner of Jay and Ames streets. A convenience store on the corner of James and Ames street in Rochester, Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2026. { } "He went in there and told him, 'Please call 911, I need to get in touch with my mom,'" Acevedo said."That's just pain enough to know that your son had to be escorted home, because he didn't know where he was," said Acevedo. Acevedo said she went to her son's school the next morning to see why he was dropped off on Colvin Street several blocks away from their Campbell Street home. "The children are supposed to get dropped off at a community stop," she said. "The community stop is four blocks from my house."The school district released a statement Wednesday evening, saying the bus driver "did not take the appropriate steps to ensure the student knew where he was or how to safely get home." The district said "this failure is unacceptable and does not meet out expectations for student safety." The Rochester City School District takes this situation very seriously. Our review confirms that the student was dropped off at his assigned community bus stop with other students; however, the bus driver did not take the appropriate steps to ensure the student knew where he was or how to safely get home. That should have happened, especially given that this was the student’s first time riding the bus. This failure is unacceptable and does not meet our expectations for student safety. The transportation vendor has been notified, and disciplinary action is being taken with the driver involved. District staff and our transportation team have been in direct contact with the student’s parent, including the day of the incident and again today, to review what occurred, address concerns, and confirm the appropriate stop arrangement moving forward. After some milder days, winter will make a return Rochester, N.Y.
