A mother was walking with her young child along a dock at the Bremerton Marina Friday morning when she experienced an animal attack.
Two river otters. WDFW recently reported a child was involved in an animal attack when an otter dragged them underwater.
WDFW said officers contacted the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Wildlife Services to “trap and lethally remove river otters from the marina.” According to the agency, one otter was trapped at the scene and was taken to the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab for testing, including rabies. She added that Giardia and Cryptosporidium are also found in otters in the Puget Sound area which can be a concern for people who are immunocompromised.
“Although encounters with river otters are rare, they can be territorial and, like any wildlife, are inherently unpredictable,” Elder said.
