The Kansas City Chiefs still need to secure a win in their next two games to clinch the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs. Despite defeating the Houston Texans on Wednesday, the Chiefs' fate was initially dependent on the Buffalo Bills defeating the New England Patriots. However, the Bills secured a victory, forcing the Chiefs to continue fighting for the top spot. Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Steelers have turned their upcoming game against the Chiefs into a must-win situation after losing to the Baltimore Ravens.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes scrambles away from Houston Texans pressure during the first half of an NFL football game, Saturday, Dec. 21, 2024 in Kansas City, Mo. The Chiefs defeated the Texans, 27-19. However, Wednesday’s Christmas game could have been rendered meaningless for the Chiefs if the Buffalo Bills had lost to the New England Patriots.
The Patriots roared out to an early 14-7 lead, but the Bills returned to win with a solid second half at half, knocking off New England 24-21. With that result, the Chiefs still have to win one of their last two games to clinch the No. 1 seed. That means that if they had clinched it with a Bills loss, Patrick Mahomes and other top players could have sat against the Steelers. Now, the Steelers will face the full-strength of the Chiefs team, who sit at 14-1 with the best record in the entire NFL. The Steelers and Chiefs will play at 1 p.m., and the Steelers have turned it into a must-win game after their loss to the Baltimore Ravens. If they win out, they clinch the AFC North outright no matter what the Ravens do
