The Kansas City Chiefs were awarded a controversial catch against the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship game, sparking debate about potential favoritism by NFL officials.
The Kansas City Chiefs were awarded a controversial call late in the first half of the AFC Championship game against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. On 3rd-and-5 with 3:13 remaining in the second quarter, Patrick Mahomes scrambled and managed to find just enough space to throw a pass to rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy . Worthy and Bills safety Cole Bishop both leaped for the ball.
It appeared that Bishop might have secured the ball while they were both in the air, but Worthy managed to wrap his arm around it as they fell to the ground.Officials ruled that Worthy had completed the catch, giving the Chiefs possession instead of an interception for the Bills. Buffalo was also penalized for holding, making it highly unlikely that the ball would have returned to them. Bills head coach Sean McDermott challenged the ruling, stating that it wasn't a completed catch. The replay seemed to show the football briefly hitting the ground, but the call on the field stood. A few plays later, the Chiefs scored on a Patrick Mahomes touchdown run, extending their lead to 21-10. NFL fans were quick to point out the questionable call in favor of the Chiefs. This incident followed similar controversies surrounding the Chiefs in their divisional round win over the Houston Texans, where alleged favoritism by NFL officials was a topic of discussion. Mahomes was asked about the accusations of favoritism during the week, stating, 'I don't feel that way. I just try to play football at the end of the day. The referees are doing their best to call the game as fair and proper as best they can. For me, it's go out there, play hard, try to do whatever I can to win the football game and then live with the results based on my effort and how I play the game, and that's what we preach here in Kansas City.'
