A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Chicagoland as freezing rain and drizzle are expected to cause hazardous travel conditions tonight and Thursday morning.

Chicagoland is preparing for treacherous travel conditions as freezing rain and freezing drizzle move into the region this evening. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the city, starting at 6 p.m. and continuing until 6 a.m. Thursday. A separate advisory for the south suburbs took effect at 4 p.m. Road salt will be effective with temperatures ranging from the upper 20s to low 30s, but any untreated surfaces are anticipated to freeze rapidly.

The freezing precipitation will initially be scattered, primarily affecting the southern suburbs in the late afternoon before spreading northward throughout the evening. The most intense precipitation is expected during the night before gradually subsiding overnight. Although most areas will receive less than a tenth of an inch of ice, even a thin layer can create hazardous travel conditions.By Thursday morning, temperatures will climb into the lower 40s, allowing any remaining ice to melt by midday. Motorists and pedestrians are strongly advised to exercise caution tonight and early Thursday morning. Roads, sidewalks, and bridges may remain slippery until temperatures rise. Officials recommend allowing for additional travel time and verifying road conditions before embarking on any journeys
