Forget pace of play or the juiced home run ball, the worst problem baseball faces is owners who treat their team like an opportunity to pile up as much personal cash as possible, only worthwhile if the gap between money coming in and money going out is as wide as they can get away with.

Owning a sports franchise should be an investment in the greater good of the community where the team is based and not just a profit center, but there are several teams in major league baseball owned by people who don’t see it that way.His cheapness has been common knowledge for years, but recently some of the insidious spirit behind it came to light.

Reinsdorf’s sentiment is horrible because it’s spot-on. It works. A team run that way can get by with placating fans with year after year of also-ran clubs while not spending a lot of money. They’ll still make plenty, but not enough of that goes back to the roster or the fans., the White Sox were worth $1.6 billion in 2019, a value double what it was just five years ago. But in that span, Chicago has not won more than 78 games in a season.

SEATTLE, WA - SEPTEMBER 15: Jose Abreu #79 of the Chicago White Sox, Eloy Jimenez #74 and Yoan Moncada #10 run off the field with Welington Castillo #21, who hit a grand slam home run off of relief pitcher Brandon Brennan #65 of the Seattle MarinersBut in order for that to happen, Reinsdorf will have to break from the advice he apparently gave Samson years ago.

And that’s practically criminal, given what he could accomplish by doing a little spending this winter.
