Chicago White Sox pitchers have thrown more no-hitters — 20 — than any other American League team, according to Major League Baseball.
Here’s a look back at each one, including three perfect games. In the first game of a doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers on Sept. 20, 1902, Chicago White Sox pitcher Jimmy"Nixey" Callahan throws a no-hitter, as written about in this clipping from the Sept. 21, 1902 edition of the Chicago Tribune.“The victory of the White Stockings in the first game was due to the great pitching of Callahan, who tied the world’s record, not one of the visiting players making a hit in nine innings.
“For the second time in his comparatively brief major league career Frank Smith performed the rare feat of pitching a no hit, no run game ... All the more credit goes with Smith’s feat of yesterday because it was performed with a partially disabled pitching fist, the little finger of his right hand still being stiff and sore from the blow received during the last game he pitched when he tried to stop a hot shot from a Cleveland slugger.
“To interviewers after the game the 26 year old Missourian said that he did not know he had a no-hit game in the making until after he had struck out Vosmik to end the game. It must have been that he was so thrilled about making a triple with the bases full that he became a little absent-minded about his pitching excellence.
