A Chicago teenager is in critical condition after a shooting in Mexico claimed the lives of multiple family members. The 14-year-old was celebrating his birthday in Durango when gunmen attacked his family. Two adults, Vicente Peña Jr. and Antonio 'Tony' Fernandez, and Jorge Eduardo Vargas Aguirre were killed in the attack. The teen is hospitalized in Mexico and his family is working to bring him back to Chicago for treatment. Police are investigating the incident.

The men’s bodies were found Friday along the Francisco Zarco Highway in Santiago Papasquiaro, according to Durango officials. According to officials, the group was traveling in an SUV with Illinois license plates when they were attacked in what officials are describing as a surge in violent crime in the area.
