The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) and SEIU Local 73, two unions that supported Mayor Brandon Johnson's election, are engaged in a dispute over a CTU contract proposal. SEIU argues the proposal would unfairly take thousands of members away from Local 73, potentially jeopardizing the union's bargaining unit. The conflict centers around the roles of special education classroom assistants (SECAs), with CTU seeking to expand their responsibilities in student education, while SEIU maintains their focus should remain on providing direct care for students with disabilities.

Andre Vasquez said. "SECAs are there to service students with disabilities, and they are not there to make copies or do bulletin boards or teach or recess or lunch monitoring," Scott Kennedy said.
