As asylum seekers work to get adjusted to life here in the United States, housing and healthcare are top-of-mind.
is offering a series of vaccination clinics geared toward migrant families. Thursday afternoon's clinic was the first in a series that will be offered by the village, and it was solely for children to ensure they have the shots they need to stay in school.
While appointments are available to all, most of the families who came to the clinic today were asylum seekers, eager to get caught up on the medical care they weren't able to receive in their home countries. Interpreters are on-site at the Cheney Mansion, where the clinic was being held, to make the process more comfortable.
This comes in addition to $150,000 the village was awarded earlier this month to support asylum seekers. "We are really excited to be able to offer this as a service to the community. One – it’s mandatory for the children in order to stay in school, and we know that one thing that’s really important as children are coming here from a different country, we did not want their vaccination status to serve as a disruptor. They’ve already gone through enough," said Dr. Theresa Chapple, Public Health Director, Village of Oak Park.
