Chicago reports second measles case in 24 hours
CHICAGO -- A child was infected with the second measles case reported in Chicago early Friday morning. The second case was reported at a migrant shelter in Pilsen. The Chicago Department of Public Health said an investigation is underway to figure out who else the child may have come in contact with while infectious.According to CDPH, the young child has recovered and is no longer infectious. Health officials are working to determine if everyone at the shelter, located at 2241 S. Halsted St.
Measles is more contagious than COVID and flu, according to Dr. Katrine Wallace, an epidemiologist at the University of Illinois at Chicago.According to the World Health Organization, complications can include blindness, encephalitis , severe diarrhea, dehydration, ear infections severe breathing problems, including pneumonia.Anyone who develops symptoms of measles should contact a health care provider by phone or email before going to a medical office or emergency department.
