Chicago police Superintendent David Brown quietly stepped down Thursday, three years after he was picked to lead the Police Department.

Chicago police Superintendent David Brown briefs reporters outside Mt. Sinai Hospital, where a Chicago police officer was transported after being fatally shot during a domestic dispute call in the Southwest Side, March 1, 2023.

A month into the job, Brown called getting Chicago to under 300 annual homicides a “moonshot” goal. Homicides rose from 498 in 2020 to 797 in 2021, then 695 in 2022, according to city data. Brown announced his plans to resign in early March, the day after Lightfoot lost her mayoral reelection bid. He is taking a position as chief operating officer at a personal injury law firm, he said at the time.
