Chicago Park District summer programming will be moved indoors or canceled on Thursday as air quality in the city is expected to worsen.
Air quality alerts remain in effect as Canadian wildfire smoke billows toward the Chicago area. An air quality alert that was originally set to expire Wednesday night was extended through Thursday by the National Weather Service as"unhealthy" air quality isChicago Park District officials said the air quality and high temperatures expected on Thursday prompted the decision to move their summer programming indoors to the extent feasible.
Participants can check the status of their program with their local park, officials said. The Air Quality Alert has been extended and expanded in area over portions of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana through Thursday night due to unhealthy ozone and wildfire smoke levels at times. Consider limiting prolonged outdoor activity.
The National Weather Service advised children, teens, older adults and people with asthma to reduce their exposure outside and watch for symptoms of coughing or shortness of breath during the period of poor air quality. A harrowing scene was captured on video as Canadian National Railway crew was surrounded by a raging wildfire inside a train in northern Ontario.
