Chicago P.D. stars LaRoyce Hawkins and Patrick John Flueger tease Detective Hailey Upton's fate after season 9's major cliffhanger. Acting as a sister show to both Chicago Fire and Chicago Med, Chicago P.
D. chronicles the lives of the police officers in District 21, both uniformed cops and also the members of the elite Intelligence Unit. Chicago P.D. is now on season 9 and showing no signs of slowing down, with murder cover-ups, custody battles, officers going rogue, and secret romances comprising several of the storylines so far. Season 9, episode 21, the last before the finale, ended on a big cliffhanger as Detectives Upton and Jay Halstead were caught in a shocking explosion. The Chicago P.D. episode ends with Halstead emerging from the blast unharmed, but Upton's fate is left in the balance, with the episode cutting to black before viewers know whether or not she survived.In a new interview with TV Insider, Hawkins and Flueger hint that, although things might look dire for Upton, the duo believes the character will pull through. Hawkins explains that members of Intelligence have historically been very tough, citing the numerous other injuries that characters on the show have experienced and recovered from. Flueger adds that Spiridakos also"brings the light" on set and jokes that her character has superhuman healing abilities. Check out the comments from Hawkins and Flueger below: Hawkins: “Historically we’ve seen this unit take so much abuse whether it’s explosions, nine millimeter bullets to the gut, car crashes and accidents. And I’m not sure if our audience has figured this out yet, but we’re Intelligence. One of us is worth at least six regular cops — ” Flueger: “Or nine, I’m gonna up you three. Also, who gets rid of Tracy Spiridakos from a show? You just don’t do it. Also, we’d all be very sad on set because she brings the light. If anybody has Wolverine-like healing abilities, it’s Upton.” Although Upton may have"Wolverine-like healing abilities" not everyone on Chicago P.D. has been so lucky, with previous deaths including Justin Voight, Nadia, Alvin, and Lexi. While the show, created by Law & Order's Dick Wolf, has historically been quite ruthless with certain characters, it has also been very lenient with others, seeing central members of Intelligence pull through after suffering a variety of life-threatening injuries. It remains to be seen what effects the explosion will have on Upton and if there will be lasting damage, but at the very least, audiences can now rest assured that she will pull through and live to fight another day. With only one episode left this season, it's likely that Escano will be either caught or killed in the upcoming Chicago P.D. season 9 finale. After suffering such a severe blow, Upton will surely want to exact revenge on the ruthless drug lord, as will her Chicago P.D. colleagues. While Upton is now confirmed to have survived, the official synopsis for the upcoming finale teases that the team will be"pushed to their breaking point," hinting that the worst may be yet to come for Intelligence.
