Inside St. Sabina Academy, Ms. Mayberry’s first grade class wore hats that read “I Am Somebody” and colored photos of the late Reverend Jesse Jackson. “He is like a hero for Black Americans and I like him,” said Kylie, a student in the class at the school in Chicago's Gresham neighborhood, located at 7801 S.
Throop St.It is the kind of day that Chicagoans will look back on and say – where were you when Jesse Jackson’s life was celebrated? “They’ll never forget the day they watched on TV,” said Chiquitha Mayberry, the first-grade teacher at St. Sabina Academy. “ They’ll never forget the experience.” Older students at the south side school also spent the day watching the services and using the time to reflect on the movement.“If it wasn’t for him, we would not have as many voter rights, or protest as much as we do,” said Kayla Hamberlin, an eighth-grade student.“After hearing his poem, I am somebody, it really shows how much you mean even if no one cares,” said 13-year-old Ayanna Flowers. “It really inspired me to be who I am no matter what anybody calls me.”
