Chicago Cubs president Jed Hoyer stated at the 2025 Cubs Convention that the team's offseason activity is far from complete, assuring fans of more roster additions in the near future. While the acquisition of Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros was a major highlight, Hoyer emphasized that the team will continue to make moves to strengthen its bullpen and bench.
Chicago Cubs fans hoping for a significantly different team in 2024, which finished with a disappointing 83-79 record, have reason to be optimistic. Team president Jed Hoyer , speaking at the beginning of the 2025 Cubs Convention, reassured fans that the team's offseason activity is far from over. 'We're not done,' Hoyer stated. 'There's definitely more additions on the way.' The acquisition of Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros in a major trade was the highlight of the Cubs' offseason.
The Cubs addressed a need for a star-level player by trading pitcher Hayden Wesneski and prospects for Tucker. While the trade thinned the Cubs' pitching depth, they have since added Colin Rea, Matthew Boyd, and Caleb Thielbar in recent months. Hoyer indicated that pitching might not be a primary focus for further additions as Spring Training approaches.Hoyer also mentioned the team plans to move forward with its current infield configuration. Regarding the third base position, Hoyer expects the Cubs to find their starting third baseman internally. This decision stems from Hoyer's desire to prioritize additions to the bullpen and the team's bench in any future moves. The majority of significant remaining additions are anticipated to be bullpen reinforcements. Hoyer emphasized the importance of having a strong bullpen, noting that the Cubs were one of the top eight teams to make a free-agent pitch to Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki. Although disappointed that they didn't secure a spot in the top three to sign Sasaki, Hoyer remains optimistic about finding bullpen additions. Hoyer's confidence in bolstering the bullpen stems from the team's successful negotiation of a one-year, $16.5 million contract with Tucker, averting arbitration. 'I'm glad we put that behind us,' Hoyer expressed. With the Tucker contract settled, Hoyer can now concentrate on any remaining bench and bullpen additions. Considering the time frame of mid-January, Hoyer acknowledges that free agent options will be limited after the initial wave of signings. He will need to be strategic, but expressed confidence in making roster improvements. 'There's a lot of good players out there,' Hoyer stated. 'We’ll look to upgrade the roster however we can.
