A Chicago couple lost thousands of dollars and suffered injuries after falling victim to a violent scam at a Target store. The scammers exploited a payment feature on iPhones to charge a significantly higher amount than intended.

A local couple, Drew and Leilani, lost thousands of dollars and incurred a hefty hospital bill after encountering a violent scam at a Target store on the Near North Side of Chicago. The ordeal began when the couple was approached by two men posing as panhandlers, claiming they needed donations to bury their baby brother. Feeling charitable, Drew and Leilani agreed to donate $20, but the scammers refused cash. When Leilani tried using her credit card, the transaction was denied.

Drew then attempted to pay using his Apple card, but the scammers had manipulated the payment system to charge nearly $5,000 instead of the intended $20. Drew realized the deception and pursued the scammers as they fled. He attempted to apprehend them in the Target parking garage, resulting in a struggle and Drew being thrown from a moving car. The incident left Drew with a fractured right rib and a punctured right lung. The scammers exploited a feature on iPhones that allows users to set a price for quick payments with another phone via tap. Instead of setting the price at $20, they entered $4,500, demonstrating the potential for significant financial harm through such scams
