Chicago and surrounding areas are facing a dangerous cold snap with sub-zero temperatures and wind chills as low as -25 degrees. The extreme weather has prompted school closures, Amtrak cancellations, and the relocation of President Trump's inauguration ceremony. The cold is expected to persist through mid-week, bringing the risk of ice jams and flooding.

Chicago was waking up to a frigid morning on Monday, with sub-zero temperatures and wind chills as low as -15 degrees. The NBC 5 Storm Team predicts that the cold will intensify throughout the week. A wind chill advisory was in effect through 12 p.m. Monday, with wind chills plummeting as low as 20 degrees below zero. This advisory will be re-issued at 9 p.m., persisting until 12 p.m. Tuesday, when wind chills are anticipated to drop to a bone-chilling 20 to 25 degrees below zero.

As of 5:30 a.m., Monday, temperatures dipped to -5 degrees in DeKalb, -4 degrees in Waukegan, and -3 degrees in Chicago, according to meteorologist, Sack. At O'Hare International Airport, while the temperature registered -1 degree, the wind chill made it feel like -15 degrees. The intense cold wave wasn't confined to Chicago. Even the nation's capital felt the bite. President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration ceremony in Washington D.C. on Monday was moved indoors due to cold weather advisories and extreme cold warnings.Minnesota, which experienced temperatures as low as -30 degrees in some areas, urged residents to dress warmly and carry survival kits for travel. Amtrak canceled trains on at least five different lines through Wednesday due to the extreme cold, impacting regions in the Pacific Northwest, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois. In the Chicago area, high temperatures on Monday were expected to barely reach 10 or 11 degrees, with wind chills as low as -20. Overnight, the coldest air is expected to settle in, Sack warned. Tuesday morning lows will hover around -6 degrees, with wind chills ranging from -15 to -25. Although sunshine is predicted, temperatures won't rise significantly, Sack said, with highs remaining in the low single digits. Sub-zero wind chills will persist through Wednesday morning, with the coldest conditions hitting late tonight into Tuesday morning. The National Weather Service warned that the extreme cold on Tuesday could lead to rapid ice formation on area rivers, potentially resulting in ice jams and localized flooding. At least three schools in the Chicago area were scheduled to be closed on Tuesday, including Horizon Science Academy Belmont in Chicago, City of Hobart Schools in Indiana, and Faith Movers Academy in University Park. Fortunately, some relief is expected on Wednesday, with highs in the low 20s and a chance for light snow. However, wind chills will remain in the single digits, Sack said. By the weekend, temperatures are predicted to climb into the mid-30s, with more opportunities for intermittent snowfall, Sack added
