The Chicago area is bracing for a significant cold snap , with temperatures expected to plummet to their lowest point in nearly six years. If forecasts hold true, Chicago could experience its coldest temperatures since late January 2019, particularly on Monday and Tuesday.
Overnight lows on those nights are predicted to dip below zero, with a projected low of minus-7 degrees on Monday night, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team. Before the deep freeze sets in, Chicagoans can expect a roller coaster of wintry weather. A light dusting of snow is anticipated overnight Wednesday and into Thursday morning, though accumulations are expected to be minimal. However, untreated roads could become slick due to the cold temperatures. Temperatures will actually see a slight increase overnight and into Thursday, with the warmest readings in weeks arriving across the area. Highs will reach the mid-to-upper 30s on Thursday and could even climb into the upper 30s or low 40s on Friday. These temperatures would mark the warmest days of the year so far, surpassing the freezing mark only on four previous days in the city. Following this brief respite, temperatures will take a sharp downward turn. After highs in the 20s on Saturday, Sunday will bring a significant drop, with readings expected to fall into the low teens. Overnight Sunday and into Monday, temperatures could plunge to minus-5 degrees, with wind chills potentially dipping 15-to-25 degrees below zero across the area, according to forecast models. Notably, if the low temperature reaches minus-7 degrees on Monday night, it will be the coldest the city has experienced since December 23, 2022, when the low reached minus-8 degrees. If temperatures drop even further, it would be the coldest Chicago has seen since January 30 and 31, 2019, when lows reached minus-21 and minus-23 degrees, respectively. Tuesday night will see another dip below zero, with highs only in the single digits. However, by Wednesday, temperatures are expected to begin stabilizing, with highs in the 20s for the remainder of the work week
