After days of wildfire smoke, Saturday will bring some improvement from conditions on Thursday. However, it won't last long.
While skies were mainly clear on Saturday morning, a plume of smoke is expected to arrive this evening and persist overnight into early Sunday. A second wave of wildfire smoke and several rounds of storms will hit the Chicago area over the weekend.

In addition to the smoke, severe weather is possible, with a chance of thunderstorms later in the day. NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Pete Sack explained, as of Saturday morning, air quality had improved to moderate-to-good levels, with relatively good air quality stretching from New Lenox up to Libertyville and beyond.
However, it's expected to get a little unhealthy at times. If wildfire smoke caused any breathing issues on Friday, you'll likely want to take precautions as similar conditions return. Sack explained much of the smoke will likely remain in the upper levels of the atmosphere, though air quality could still pose problems for those with breathing issues. As the noon timeframe arrives, some thunderstorms are expected to begin developing. By 2 p.m., storms will begin sliding their way southward and will continue to do so until around 4 p.m., creating a relatively narrow window for showers.
As for the severe weather threat, the Storm Prediction Center has placed the region under a marginal to slight risk of severe weather with damaging winds, hail and heavy downpours all possible. As storms approach, stay tuned to the NBC 5 Storm Team for any watches or warnings that develop. The evening is looking somewhat comfortable, though it's when we'll start to see the hazy conditions return and air quality slowly deteriorate through Sunday morning.
For Sunday overall, expect hazy sunshine and temperatures dropping slightly, with highs in the low 80s. Over the next 10 days, a chance of storms arrives late Monday into Tuesday, with the possibility of some storms turning severe.
Then, temperatures cool off by midweek as highs drop into the upper 70s and low 80s. Afterward, a slight chance for storms arrives on Friday.
