Updated: Oct. 05, 2023, 12:01 p.m.Chef Peter Posteuca and his wife Margaret Pulhac have owned the Blue Danube restaurant for 33 years.Under the cover of night and with his shoes tied around his neck, 19-year-old Peter Posteuca swam across the Danube River from Romania to Yugoslavia in 1976, escaping communism and desolate living conditions. Posteuca made it to Austria, then he immigrated to the United States.

“I will never forget flying into the JFK airport and seeing the Statue of Liberty from the window,” Posteuca said. “I still get chill bumps thinking about that day.
