The major pop star who has been praised for her iconic voice is now being slammed on social media by viewers over her SNL performance. Several members of the audience seemed to believe that Cher was being disingenuous by allegedly lip-syncing instead of singing live, as all other musical guests do on Saturday Night Live.
For obvious reasons, this goes against the spirit of the show, where almost everything is filmed and aired on the spot. The legendary artist sang a few Holiday songs during SNL's Christmas episode, and she really seemed to be enjoying her time on stage with the studio audience. However, eagle-eyed fans noticed that several aspects of her performance seemed off. And, they didn't hold back the criticisms, especially when Cher sang “DJ Play a Christmas Song.” At several points during her performance, her mouth allegedly stopped moving. However, the audience could clearly still hear her singing despite her lips not matching up with the vocals. While Saturday Night Live does permit the use of background tracks, the long-running comedy sketch series does frown upon lip-syncing. The posts on X and comments on YouTube videos ranged from angry to disappointed. One viewer stated that Cher didn't even try to do a good job lip-syncing, and how it seemed like she couldn't care less if she got called out for it or not. Another complimented the singer, saying that she has a beautiful voice, so she was doing herself a disservice by lip-syncing instead of showing off her talent. Others just didn't care at all. Many even defended her alleged lip-syncing, saying that Cher earned her place in the music industry so she can do whatever she pleases, because she has already proved that she can sing."Who cares if she's lip-syncing? SHE'S CHER, B****," said one X user. Subscribe to our newsletter for smarter entertainment takes Want clearer context on entertainment moments like the Cher SNL lip-sync debate? Another fan explained in a comment on Saturday Night Live's YouTube video that, since Cher is nearly 80 years old, she gets a pass as performing live can be very exhausting, especially if you're older."Idc about her lip-syncing. It's late, she's 80, she just wants to have some fun." 82 7.4/10 8/10 Saturday Night Live 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed TV-14 Comedy News Music Release Date October 11, 1975 Network NBC Showrunner Lorne Michaels Directors Dave Wilson, Don Roy King, Liz Patrick, Andy Warhol, Linda Lee Cadwell, Matthew Meshekoff, Paul Miller, Robert Altman, Robert Smigel Writers Will Forte, Bill Hader, Tina Fey, Kristen Wiig, Chris Parnell, Asa Taccone, John Lutz, Tom Schiller, Simon Rich, Michael Patrick O'Brien, Nicki Minaj, Herbert Sargent, Matt Piedmont, John Solomon, Chris Kelly, Alan Zweibel, Kent Sublette, Ari Katcher, Marika Sawyer, Sarah Schnedier, Scott Jung, Justin Franks, Jerrod Bettis, Rhiannon Bryan Cast See All Genres Comedy, News, Music Powered by Expand Collapse Cher Birthdate May 20, 1946 Birthplace El Centro, California, USA
