Chef Marcela Valladolid shares the career lessons that brought her to her next venture—a children's cookbook with Lil Libros

Now, after hosting multiple cooking shows and championing the flavors of Mexican culture, Valladolid is thankful that her story has come so full circle and that it’s celebrated her Latinidad every step of the way.

“We are a beautiful, magical people with the best food in the world,” shares Valladolid. “We bring so much to our communities because of our love of family. We are lovers of life and tradition and culture and our foods and customs are part of the fabric of society for a reason.” “I was 20 when this all started and things have shifted since then. Now I don’t feel the weight of having something to prove. I’m just living my life and sharing it.

“I was a contestant on The Apprentice: Martha Stewart and more than her telling me I learned from her that authenticity is key,” shares Valladolid. “She had a huge issue with a contestant using the phrase ‘fake it ‘til you make it’ and fired her that same episode. She taught me that you can’t fake being a master of your craft. Observing her it was clear that she had a clear purpose; to teach. And taught she did. I still admire her deeply for that. Very few things have depth anymore.

“I live it in how I cook and entertain,” shares Valladolid. “How my family is at the core of all I do. How I raise my kids. My half-breed culture informs everything I do but I’m not thinking about it. I’m just doing it. Not until very late in my career did I realize that I was so fortunate to just live with this profound pride in being half Mexican without being attacked for it.
