Street to Kitchen's Benchawan Jabthong Painter won Best Chef Texas in the 2023 James Beard Foundation's annual awards Monday night, arguably the country's most prestigious culinary honor.

The James Beard Foundation has faced controversy and upheaval in recent years over the transparency of how its awards are doled out, the lack of diversity of candidates and whether awards should be given out at all. It also canceled ceremonies in 2020 and 2021. Most recently, Alabama chef Timothy Hontzas was disqualified for allegedly violating the organization's code of ethics. Committee members, including a chef and notable past Beard winner, sharply criticized the foundation and some resigned.
During Saturday’s media awards, Beard Foundation CEO Clare Reichenbach nodded to the swirling controversy ahead of the higher profile restaurant and chef awards. “There’s a bit of noise around this year’s awards as we bring our mission and values center stage,” Reichenbach said. “We’re about raising people up, not calling them out.”
