Formula 1: Lando Norris has admitted he didn't deserve to win the Hungarian Grand Prix but believes McLaren's decision to pit him first put he and Piastri in an awkward position.

“We had a flight back from Budapest that was significantly delayed,” Piastri told select media, including Fox Sports, of his hard return to earth. “We were flying with a few of the drivers. Lando was there, Alex Albon and a couple of others.“There was nothing crazy, just a couple of F1 drivers getting some burgers and nuggets, really.

His maiden campaign demonstrated his spectacular single-lap pace, but managing race pace was more difficult. Massaging Pirelli’s particular and delicate tyres is the dark art of Formula 1, and Piastri’s experience deficit showed relative to teammate Norris. “When I when I look back to Hungary last year, I had in all honesty a pretty terrible race with how I managed it, so I was proud of how the fortunes had changed so much in 12 months. That perspective says everything you need to know about the 23-year-old ace.

“If I want to be world champion, which I certainly do, then you can’t just settle for being pretty good or doing most things right; you’ve got to do everything right. “I’m certainly by no means claiming I’m a complete driver just because I’ve won a race now. I’m still trying to work on the bigger picture.
