The southern neighborhood, known as South Collinwood or Collinwood-Nottingham, borders Glenville and the suburbs. Railroad lines and I-90 divide the two.

Some areas remain solidly middle-class, but a large swath of the population lives in poverty. Median income hovers between $26,000 and $28,000, according to the 2021 data.North Collinwood, South Collinwood and Euclid-Green are home to some 31,000 people combined, according to 2021 data from the Center for Community Solutions. That’s roughly the size of the suburb of Westlake.

Some industry is still located near the rail lines, but much of what remains from the area’s manufacturing heyday are hulking, vacant buildings that were once home to thousands of jobs.This eye-catcher in the Waterloo Arts District, home to Pop Life, is a former bank building that got a makeover from French artist Camille Walala.

That parkland -- known collectively as Euclid Beach Park, Wildwood Park and Villa Angela Beach -- offers the East Side of Cleveland its only public swimming beach. It’s on the grounds of the former Euclid Beach Amusement Park and land once occupied by Villa Angela Academy, founded in 1878 to educate girls.

Don’t sleep on V’s Gourmet Chicken on Lakeshore Boulevard, said by some to be the best fried chicken in the city. Irie’s Jamaican Kitchen, on East 185th Street, is another can’t-miss, with mouth-watering jerk chicken and other Jamaican fare in build-your-own bowls. Tragedy struck on March 4, 1908, when a fire at the Lakeview School killed 172 students and three adults in what would be one of the deadliest school disasters in U.S. history, prompting a wave of safety laws across the country.
