Today is the Mustang's birthday. Obviously Ford had to celebrate...Happy Mustang Day everyone. April 17th 1964 is officially regarded as the date Ford launched probably its most famous car that wasn’t a Model T or a pickup truck. And on the basis that this year marks 60 years of pony car excellence , Ford has introduced the Ford Mustang 60th Anniversary Package as a limited-production model. Just 1,965 will be built in a nod to the first year of production . While the point of the new trim is to nominally celebrate ‘seven generations of Mustang driving freedom, fun and style’, it’s mostly the original version that has supplied the inspiration for the design changes. No one could miss the unique, five-spoke 20-inch wheels with a Vermillion red centre cap or the ’60 Years’ graphic and badges, but Ford has also gone to the trouble of installing a new grille with silver-accented nostrils and a unique mesh design that harks back to the first car. It has even gone with a smoked housing for the headlights so the effect stands out more. “The design was directly inspired by the clean silhouette of the original car,” said Stefan Taylor, senior designer. “Our focus was capturing the feel of the ‘65, while also staying true to the Mustang as the modern sports car that it is.” The limited edition model, which can be had as both a coupe or convertible ought to go down a treat in the US - and probably over here too, if the enthusiasm shown by the 800-car turnout at theFord says the 60th Anniversary Package will be available to order this summer; there’s no confirmation yet if it will be available beyond North America, although a nod to the fact that ‘Mustang is sold on six of the seven continents’ suggests it might be. For now, the options in the UK remain limited to the GT and the Dark Horse , both available exclusively with the V8. The presence of a new generation car in Warwickshire is a reminder that its arrival is imminent. We couldn’t be more excited; after all, it’s been sixty years in the making.
