Chase Briscoe secures the pole position for the Daytona 500, setting the stage for the iconic race. Briscoe's impressive qualifying run highlights the unique qualifying format for the event, with the final starting grid determined by Thursday's Duel qualifying races.
The NASCAR Cup Series kicks off its season with the prestigious Daytona 500 , a race steeped in tradition and excitement. This year's 67th annual running is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 16th, at Daytona International Speedway. Unlike other races on the Cup schedule, the Daytona 500 features a unique qualifying format that sets the stage for the main event. Wednesday night's single-car qualifying session determines only the front row of the starting grid.
Chase Briscoe, driving for Stewart-Haas Racing, secured the pole position with a blistering lap speed of 182.745 mph, outpacing a number of Ford challengers. Austin Cindric, a former Daytona 500 winner and driver for Team Penske, qualified second in a Ford. The remaining drivers will secure their starting positions in the Daytona 500 based on their performance in Thursday's Duel qualifying races. These two 60-lap races will determine the rest of the starting grid for the main event. The Duel at Daytona is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday and will be broadcast live on Fox Sports 1 and streamed online. Adding to the intrigue, two open drivers – both former Cup Series champions – have already clinched their spots in the Daytona 500. Martin Truex Jr. (No. 56) and seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson (No. 84) posted the fastest qualifying times among the nine open cars. Both drivers have the opportunity to improve their starting positions by winning their respective Duels. The winner of the first Duel will start third, the winner of the second Duel will start fourth, and so on. The rules for the Daytona 500 have been modified to allow for a car owner/driver to compete. Four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves secured a starting spot in the race as part of this rule change. Castroneves will be driving for Trackhouse Racing. Under the new rule, the driver/car owner is ineligible for race points, playoff points, or prize money. Cars finishing behind the elite driver will have their finishing positions adjusted upward one spot, and their prize money, race points, and stage points will also be adjusted accordingly
