Once heralded as the franchise’s incumbent everyday center fielder, Jake Meyers was not the same player after he returned from his offseason shoulder surgery and batted .209 in 149 major-league plate appearances before he was eventually demoted to Class AAA. He came back to the Astros at the end of the season but struck out in each of his two AL Division Series plate appearances.

McCormick came up through the Astros’ minor-league system primarily as a corner outfielder but has spent his first two seasons in the majors working to become a center fielder. The decision was somewhat necessitated by opportunity, as the Astros already had Michael Brantley and Kyle Tucker as everyday options in left and right field when McCormick came up in 2021.

“Any opportunity I get, even if I don't play, I'm not going to pout, complain, because this team has one goal and it's to win a World Series,” McCormick said. “But Dusty believing in me, it means a lot. Just even last year platooning in center field, and even this year platooning in center field, it's a roller coaster and it's hard. It's hard to kind of know my role at times. But towards the end of the year, I kind of just silenced it out, stopped thinking about it.
