Nic Batum hopes his 4-year-old biracial son, Ayden, will never face what he and his teammates have.

Growing up playing basketball in France, Charlotte Hornets guard-forward Nic Batum was called a monkey and had bananas thrown at him.

"The last events of the two tragic deaths the last three months and everything going on, I mean we have to do something," Batum said during a Zoom call with reporters Wednesday. "If you have a platform, if you have some voices for change to touch people, you have to do it in a good way." Fellow Hornet Bismack Biyombo, who's from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, says there must be continued action after the protests. He expressed support for Hornets owner Michael Jordan's pledge last week to donate $100 million over 10 years to organizations focused on social justice.

"As the issue is ongoing, as players, we have this platform," he said. "We've gotta use it and raise our voice for those who can't be heard, and I think as we see across the league, most of the players have been involved, white and black, because this is everybody's issue and we all have to be in some way uncomfortable, having the uncomfortable conversation," Biyombo said.
