Charlize Theron as Lorraine Broughton holding her collar and looking tired in Atomic Blonde
A Charlize Theron film is landing new success in 2025 through the world of streaming on HBO Max, nearly a decade after its theatrical run. As 2017's Atomic Blonde is streaming on HBO Max in the United States, the spy thriller is currently trending at 10 on Warner Bros.
Discovery's streaming platform. The film is based on Antony Johnston and Sam Hart's graphic novel, The Coldest City, as Kurt Johnstad penned the screenplay. David Leitch helmed the project, with Theron starring as M16 agent Lorraine Broughton, with the cast also featuring James McAvoy as David Percival, John Goodman as Emmett Kurzfeld, Toby Jones as Eric Gray, Eddie Marsan as Spyglass, and Sofia Boutella as Delphine Lasalle. Theron also worked on Atomic Blonde as an executive producer. While produced on a $30 million budget, Atomic Blonde grossed $100 million at the worldwide box office, making it a commercial success for Focus Features. In the U.S., the Theron movie pulled in $51.6 million while the remaining $48.3 million came from international markets. In ScreenRant's Atomic Blonde movie review, Chris Agar commented how the "screenplay prevent it from realizing its full potential, but the film still makes for a solid time at the theater." Agar also stated that "Atomic Blonde can be recommended for genre enthusiasts eager to see something geared for a more adult crowd, but it's honestly something that only those intrigued by the marketing should rush out to see." On Rotten Tomatoes, Atomic Blonde's Critics' Score is at 79% while having a 64% rating on the Popcornmeter. After the Atomic Blonde ending, there has been an attempt to make a sequel, but it has not been formally greenlit. Theron and Leitch have both been on the record about trying to get Atomic Blonde 2 made, potentially as a Netflix Original.
