The filmmakers emphasized their desire to accurately represent the spiky, unvarnished truth of these events and characters inTheron said it was important that they “set out on a road of whatever the greater truth is, and stayed on that road, never veered, and tried to make her sympathetic, or to try and persuade people to like [Kelly], to make people think that she was a hero or a good person. We just told the truth of what her story was.
“Women don’t always do the right thing,” Theron continued, “This idea of what a victim looks like, what an abuser looks like, is not black and white—it’s incredibly gray. That is what I was fascinated by.” For Theron, in shepherdingto the big screen, “it was important to us to always stay on that path to truth. That’s what she deserves, that’s what the movie deserves, and that was what was most important.
