Mountain bike sensation is on track for Paris thanks to recent successes and admits it would be four years ahead of schedule.

Charlie Aldridge admits sharing a podium with his boyhood hero Nino Schurter last month left him feeling ALIEN. But it’s securing a first Olympics spot with Team GB that the Scots mountain biking star insists would be out of this world.

And the Perth rider - currently competing in the shadow of the Dolomites in Italy’s Val Di Sole leg of the World Cup - admits that would be yet another career high as he continues to scale the charts alongside the world’s elite. “That was a totally surreal moment, to be honest. He’d been on the podium 90-odd times in his career - that was my first! So that was definitely one of my career highs.

But the mechanical engineering student’s journey has rocketed over the last two years to the stage where it looks certain he’ll be on the team beside Tokyo 2021 gold medallist Tom Pidcock. Not that he’s taking anything for granted. “In the long scheme of things I was never really aiming for Paris. In my head Los Angeles was the one to target. I did well last year and suddenly Paris is on the cards. It feels like a super-exciting bonus in a way.”
