Earlier in the day Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg announced that the statue would be relocated.The Charleston City Council voted 13-0 to remove the statue, which was gifted to the city in 1898, from downtown Marion Square. The statue had already been vandalized by protesters last week amid Black Lives Matter protests in the city.
