San Francisco’s culinary industry expressed shock and heartbreak Tuesday following the unexpected death of Slanted Door founder and celebrated Vietnamese chef Charles Phan .

Phan. a Vietnam War refugee who spent his teenage years living in San Francisco’s Chinatown, is widely regarded as a revolutionary Vietnamese chef, responsible for elevating and modernizing his home country’s cuisine, and those of other countries on the continent. “Nobody was willing to pay that kind of money,” Tao said. “But he stuck to his principles, to his pride, to his belief.”
