Multiple protesters who took part in the anti-Israel demonstrations in the nation's capital Wednesday had their criminal charges dropped, TND confirmed Friday.
Anti-Israel protesters burned an effigy on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Columbus Circle outside of Washington D.C. 's Union Station. Protesters climbed the center flagpole outside the historic train station and added American flags to the burning pile.
MPD made five arrests around 11:35 a.m. at the intersection of Independence Avenue and Fourth Street SW. TND confirmed Friday morning the OAG has not yet made a charging decision on these cases. The Office of the Attorney General for Washington, D.C., did not provide comment when requested by TND over the past two days. This article will be updated with any direct comments obtained.The U.S. Attorney’s Office decided to separately move forward with charging nine out of the 10 separate arrests made Wednesday by U.S. Park Police during a violent clash with anti-Israel protesters.
Criminal violations are prosecuted in a unique way in Washington, D.C. The U.S. Attorney prosecutes all felony crimes committed by adults and many charged misdemeanors.
